Move your neck more!
If you read this blog, you probably spend a lot of time in front of your computer, either it is for your business, work job or leisure. More and more people today spend hours and hours looking down their screen!
What does it mean?
It means poor posture, and the big problem it starts with kids, because kids play online, chat…
Anyway, according to chiropractors, it’s common now to see people at a young age with a dowager's hump! This is a rounding at the base of the neck resulting with a hump of the upper back and rounded shoulders. It may lead to major back problems!
What is the solution?
Simple, you have to move. Every hour spent in front of your computer, stand up, walk and stretch for a few minutes. If you feel your muscles of the neck and upper back are tensed, you really need to stretch these areas.
First you have to keep the mobility of your neck, just simple movements will do the job: flexion and extension of the neck, lateral flexion and little circles. Then move your shoulders: rotate them in both ways.
Second, be aware of your head posture, be aware how you stand, be aware of the position of your shoulders.
Most people have weak neck muscles: these muscles, like all others, need to be trained. I will be back on this in a future post.

Thanks for the tip. Really need it since I spend more than 12 hours in front of my computer everyday.
Great time for me to find your blog. Had a very painful slipped rib syndrome problem in upper right back area just last week. Still trying to reduce the swelling in back muscles, numbness in my right hand and get back to normal.
My understanding is slipped ribs syndrome happens due to weakened tendons and there are a number of things that can cause the ribs to slip out of place suddenly.
I'll be posting my experience with it either Monday or Tuesday at angelabetts.com. Do you have any exercises that can help this issue?
Angela, not sure for the exercises yet, but some stretching exercises and swimming could be good. Anyway you should consult a good chiropractor, you probably need some re-alignment, also massage will help to relax the muscles. For sure, when everything is ok, you'll need to strengthen some muscles: back muscles and respiratory mucles (deep breathing exercises may help). Let me know...
Dominic, thanks! I appreciate your response. I am seeing a chiropractor and he has worked wonders. Once I reach a point where it's safe to do so, I do plan to do exercises to strengthen the muscles.
I've subscribed to your blog because I can understand and make sense out of the exercises you teach and explain here and their benefits. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
